![]() In the early 21st century, the refinery was redeveloped as office space, residential towers, and parkland. Demand started to decline in the 1920s with advances in sugar refining and the construction of other facilities, but the refinery continued to operate until 2004. Many different types of sugar were refined at the facility, and it employed up to 4,500 workers at its peak in 1919. The American Sugar Refining Company grew to control most of the sugar industry in the United States by the late 19th century, with the Brooklyn refinery as its largest plant. After a fire destroyed the original structures, the current complex was built in 1882 by Theodore A. Havemeyer Jr., the son of American Sugar's founder. The family's first refinery in Williamsburg opened in 1856 and was operated by Frederick C. When active as a refinery, it was operated by the Havemeyer family's American Sugar Refining Company, which produced Domino brand sugar and was one of several sugar factories on the East River in northern Brooklyn. The Domino Sugar Refinery is a mixed-use development and former sugar refinery in the neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York City, along the East River. Cookfox (One South First and Ten Grand)Ħ00,000 square feet (56,000 m 2) of office space, 200,000 square feet (19,000 m 2) of retail space. It is, however, just as striking as its source of inspiration was. The LED replica is 43 feet and 6.5 inches tall, 65 feet and 8 inches wide and it apparently weighs less than its original counterpart given the fact that it is made with aluminum. The refinery building, on the other hand, has been undergoing a slew of renovations throughout the years that are continuing through today. Upon completion, the structure will stand 235 feet tall, it will be home to 460,000 square feet of office space, it will feature a barrel-vaulted glass dome and-of course-boast the new resplendent sign. Real estate developer Two Trees and Domino Sugar are currently looking for a new, proper home for the original sign. Unfortunately, officials were not able to properly store the signage and so the one that was just installed on top of the building is actually a replica. The building was protected by its landmark status, but the iconic sign was not and it was therefore moved to a nearby location. In 2003, the plant shuttered and the site became home to new developments, including the now-beloved Domino Park. An extremely lucrative business from the start, the refinery produced 5,000 barrels of sugar daily back during the 19th century but, after World War II, as corn syrup and other alternatives gained popularity, the staff started solely refining liquid sugar on-premise. Photograph: Courtesy of Two TreesĪ bit of history: the legendary Thomas Havemeyer building was erected in 1882 on an 11-acre site in Williamsburg right by the East River. What’s old is new again: a replica of the iconic 40-foot-tall Domino Sugar neon sign that adorned the Brooklyn skyline for over a century has been installed on top of the historic Domino Refinery building, which served as the Domino Sugar Factory plant from the 1880s to the early 2000s. (Warblades have very good bang for your buck in terms of how much their complexity actually pays off in terms of good gameplay, compared to the rest of the system, but it's still mechanical complexity. It's possible to build a fighter who has a ton of situational or temporary bonuses, and then you get the same issues, but that's not the default.) They're still faster in play than a lot of classes, but I'd still probably lean on the fighter as an alternative for a player who is new and/or uncomfortable with mechanical complexity, and who wants to play a character that thematically could be either. Warblades are way cooler and more fun, but they also take a little longer to play (in combat), not only because they have a larger decision space, but because there are more little bits and boosts flying around to keep track of. In addition to what people have mentioned about Warblades not really directly supporting ranged combat that well, the only reservation II'd have about wholesale replacing the Fighter with the Warblade is that it raises the complexity of the game somewhat. This handbook will not debate one way or the other. Some people think it's great and enriches melee to no end, whereas others think that it makes melee a bunch of casters. Basically he's as good with bows as a Fighter before he spends feats on Bows. Tome of Battle is one of the most debated books that's been published for the wonderful mish-mash that is 3.5. If you're playing a Fighter that is heavily investing in feats in order to do things with bows and so forth, the Warblade isn't a viable alternative. If ranged combat is a primary focus of your Fighter but you don't want to play a Fighter, then I'd look at a Ranger rather than the Warblade. If your problem is that you want a fighter that can use ranged weapons, basically it boils down to this: if by that you mean that you're not investing particular resources in making your Fighter good with a bow, but just want him to be able to whip it out and shoot people, the Warblade is fine. He does everything the Fighter does, often much better, with better numbers he's more mobile, and has a better fan of options for optimizing the 3.5 action economy. ![]() Honestly, if you're afraid the Warblade won't be competitive with the Fighter in gaming terms, don't worry - the Warblade is a lot better than the Fighter (not that it takes much, but still, it's a solid class). So basically you get a better fighter with special moves at the cost of a few feats. He doesn't get Feats, but he gets maneuvers and they're definitely superior. ![]() The Warblade has MORE hp (he rolls d12), has full B.A.B. He's got lots of HP, he's fairly accurate and has a full B.A.B. Mechanically speaking, the 3.5 Fighter is basically the Vanilla Hero (who gets lots of Feats). (Warblades have very good bang for your buck in terms of how much their complexity actually pays off in terms of good gameplay, compared to the rest of the system, but it's still mechanical complexity.)Īt the cost of sounding cynical, what kind of function does the 3.5 Fighter absolve that you need a viable replacement for? The class will have access to a greater selection of maneuvers then a warblade. In addition to what people have mentioned about Warblades not really directly supporting ranged combat that well, the only reservation I'd have about wholesale replacing the Fighter with the Warblade is that it raises the complexity of the game somewhat. It will be much harder to recover maneuvers without the Adaptive Style feat, but even so it still will take a full-round action doing nothing else. The maneuver recovery mechanic of the warblade is replaced by the recovery mechanic of the swordsage. Keep the number of warblade stances the same. The number of warblade maneuvers known, and maneuvers readied are replaced with the numbers of the sword sage. Everything else (HD, skills, features, saves, etc.) stays the same as a warblade, except the following: Start Dungeons & Dragons 3. Keep access to the same five warblade schools. ![]() The hypothesis: replacing the maneuver mechanics of a Warblade with a Swordsage. You can find details of the conversation here: ![]() I am aware, that the issue might be inefficient builds of other characters, but I wanted to focus on this individual mechanical switch. An accidental should be written directly across the line or space on which a note appears.Įxample 4 shows both correct and incorrect ways to notate sharps, flats, and naturals: Example 4. ![]() Accidentals are always written to the left of a note, regardless of stem direction. A double flat (□) lowers a note by two half steps (i.e., a whole step). Sharps, flats, and naturals are the three most common accidentals.Ī double sharp (or □) raises a note by two half steps (i.e., a whole step). A natural (♮) looks like a tilted box with a line sticking out of the top left and bottom right corners, and it cancels a previous accidental such as a sharp or flat. A flat (♭) looks like a slanted lowercase “b,” and it lowers a note by a half step. A sharp (♯) looks like a tilted hashtag, and it raises a note by a half step. Sharps, Flats, and NaturalsĪn accidental changes the pitch of a note. Chelsey Hamm (Christopher Newport University) demonstrates the sound of a half step and a whole step. What do half steps and whole steps sound like? The short video shown in Example 3 demonstrates:Įxample 3. A piano keyboard with letter names on the white keys some whole steps are labeled. A whole step below the black key to the left of B is the black key to the left of the note A. For example, a whole step above the black key to the right of C is the black key to the right of the note D. To find a whole step from a black key you will want to count two keys to the right or left. Likewise, count two keys to the left to find a whole step below the notes C or F: the black keys to the left of the notes B and E, respectively. To find a whole step above the notes E or B, simply count two keys to the right: a whole step above E is the black key to the right of the note F, while a whole step above B is the black key to the right of the note C. Pairs of white keys with a black key in between them (A and B, C and D, D and E, F and G, and G and A) are a whole step apart. Example 2 shows a piano keyboard with the letter names of the white key pitches labeled, and some whole steps bracketed. The white keys some half steps are labeled.Ī whole step is the equivalent of two half steps. Having the black keys grouped into sets of either two or three makes it easier for a keyboardist to see and feel them more quickly. This is because E–F and B–C are both half steps. For example, the black key to the upper right of G is “in between” the notes G and A one would say that this black key is a half step above G and a half step below A. Two pairs of white keys-E/F and B/C-do not have black keys in between them (see Example 1). On the piano keyboard (see Example 1), for most of the white-key notes, a half step above that note will be the black key to its upper right, while a half step below it will be the black key to its upper left. Example 1 shows a piano keyboard with the letter names of the white-key pitches and some half steps labeled. Half Steps and Whole StepsĪ half step is considered to be the smallest interval, or distance between two notes, in Western musical notation. Before we discuss the names of the black keys, however, we must first learn about half steps and whole steps. In the last chapter, The Keyboard and the Grand Staff, we discussed the letter names of the white keys on the piano keyboard and noted that the black keys are grouped into alternating sets of two or three. ![]() Notes have enharmonic equivalence when they are spelled differently but sound the same. ![]()

Both sound great and if I would describe the 339 as “lush”, the Crack would be “clean”. This last one is overall warmer sounding, has even smoother mids, more rumble in the bass (but looser) and has less pronounced treble as the Crack. It is quite a different sound signature as my other OTL amplifier, the Lafigaro 339 (review coming later). Bass is deep, well defined and punchy, the mids are very natural and smooth and the treble is nice and sparkling. Overall the Crack is a very clean sounding amplifier picking up every detail the music has. The stock configuration is good but the RCA tube just gives the amplifier a bit more body and weightier bass. I rather quickly replaced the stock Electro Harmonix input tube with one of my RCA clear top tubes. Even without any music playing, turning the volume pot was completely noiseless. The volume button, being a bit bulky, is smooth to turn and I never needed to turn it further as 10 o’ clock to get to my preferred listening level, so there is more than enough power left for you to play with. I was very happy to notice the Bottlehead Crack was dead quiet with the stock tubes and with my replacement tubes (it doesn’t hum at all). (only normal with the HE-400 not really needing any amping). I did try it briefly with the Hifiman HE-400 and while that worked, I didn’t really experience any distortion like Mike, it doesn’t really need the Crack and it also doesn’t do anything special to it. Most of my other headphones have low impedance or are orthodynamic headphones and the Crack wasn’t developed with those in mind. I specifically bought the Crack for this headphone after seeing raving posts about this combination over and over. I’ve only been using my beloved Sennheiser HD650 with the Bottlehead Crack amp. Looks do matter when buying an amplifier but in the end the sound it produces is more important, and that’s where the Crack really shines. While I think its looks are basic and very cool, I have to admit that having all the cables on top will probably never make it win a beauty contest. Some people like the look of the Crack and others hate it. It’s a DIY project so if you have the skills you can do pretty much whatever you want. It doesn’t really bother me but I’ve seen a lot of people using L shaped plugs with the Bottlehead designs and other DIY’ers have changed the layout and put the connectors on the back and front. That can be unhandy when you don’t have a lot of space or when your interconnects and power cable are rather unflexible. Like with every Bottlehead design all in- and outputs are located on top of the amplifier (even the power cable goes in on top). Anyway since Mike did the build on both our Cracks, I will let him talk more about the building process later. If you don’t feel like building the amplifier yourself, you can always order a pre-assembled Crack from Bottlehead, at an extra cost of course. Bottlehead also includes a very detailed step-by-step manual making it almost impossible to screw up. The DIY Bottlehead Crack is a fairly easy to build amplifier, anyone having experience with soldering and a multimeter can surely build one himself. Bottlehead did forget to send us the logo badges we paid for and the wood of one of the casings was slightly damaged but we were to excited to complain about that and we decided to build them like that. As Mike mentioned before in his Facebook notes, it wasn’t always easy communicating with Bottlehead, with emails getting lost/unanswered but a couple of phone calls and lots of emails later we got our DIY packages in the mail. We ordered a couple of Cracks right before the price increase was announced (more on that later) so that probably explains the long waiting period. The Bottlehead Crack amplifiers arrived a little over two months after having ordered them on Bottlehead’s website. Writing a review after Mike’s interesting and complete 2 page impressions on Facebook isn’t easy, so don’t shoot me if this review turns out short □ This is a review of the Bottlehead Crack OTL tube headphone amplifier. ![]() You can push others off the slide, or use the geyser to launch yourself up and splash dive to the pool for instant victory.
